Jaffa Juniors: Back To School

As summer comes to a close and the mammoth task of buying new school clothes, shoes, pencil cases and bags amongst tantrums and other beleaguered parents is completed, it must mean that it’s almost time for the kids to finally go back to school. As parents around the country breathe a sigh of relief and the kids mourn the summer holidays, it’s always great to remember that the Jaffa Junior team will soon be taking to the road once more.

Our dedicated Jaffa Juniors team travel the country throughout the school year to teach children the benefits of eating healthily. They brighten the school day with activities, games and fresh Jaffa oranges and easy peelers. Children also learn how oranges are grown and farmed, and the health benefits of eating citrus fruits.

While the children have fun, they’re also learning the life skills of eating right and the benefits of maintaining a healthy diet. This is essential, as the biggest killers in our society today are heart disease, diabetes and obesity. The younger we are when we learn about being healthy, the more likely we are to adhere to a healthy lifestyle, setting us up to kick chronic illnesses associated with unhealthy diets to the curb in later life.

So, not only are the kids going back to school, they may also be in with a chance of meeting our wonderful Jaffa Juniors team and learning about how to stay healthy and active. Be sure to check out our Jaffa Juniors page to see if they’ll be in a school near you later this year.

London to Brighton Bike Ride Is Huge Success

On the 19th June, hundreds of people took to the streets of London to kick off this year’s London to Brighton Bike Ride to raise money for the British Heart Foundation. The ride began in Clapham Common, wound through country roads and ended up at the beautiful Brighton seafront, where we were waiting to hand out fresh orange juice and Jaffa oranges to all those who took part and supported the ride.

Those supporting family and friends waited with us on the sunny beach and kicked off the welcome party. Plenty of selfies were taken in our huge deckchair, people basked in the sunshine whilst playing volleyball, and many of our beautiful juicy Jaffas were eaten.

The riders were truly brilliant; completing a 54 mile bike ride is no mean feat! Many of the riders were taking part in memory of loved ones they had lost to heart problems, and many of those weren’t taking part for the first time. In fact, one rider in particular, Dr David Aslett, has been taking part for 25 years and has raised over £25.000 for the British Heart Foundation. After losing his close friend Dr Mike Tomlinson to a sudden and unexpected heart attack whilst training for the London to Brighton ride, he continued to raise money and did it in memory of Mike.

Another inspirational rider is Jason Pratt. After collapsing during a holiday to Egypt in 2010, he was diagnosed with heart disease and was rushed into theatre for life-changing surgery. He began to raise money, but in 2011 he was told he wasn’t well enough to take part in the ride himself. Five years on, after plenty of hard work, training and getting fit and well, Jason was able to take part in the ride to raise money for life-saving research.

Our very own Jaffa staff took part in the ride too! They made it to Brighton beach in one piece and helped raise money along the way.

Here at Jaffa, we are proud to sponsor an organization that raises money which funds key research into the cures and treatments for heart conditions. Diagnostic methods and technology have improved so much thanks to funding from donations that the majority of babies diagnosed with heart conditions survive, and heart attack treatment has been revolutionized. However, more needs to be done. Coronary heart disease is still the UK’s biggest killer, and over half a million people are living with severe heart failure.

We at Jaffa play a small part in raising money by sponsoring the British Heart Foundation hold events such as the London to Brighton Bike Ride, but the biggest asset is you. To donate to the British Heart Foundation, click here. You can also donate to Dr David Aslett or Jason Pratt, and also read more about their inspirational journeys. You can also sign up to take part in next year’s ride here.
